By 2030, as the last Baby Boomers turn 65, older adults are expected to reach 20 percent of the population. Thereafter the proportion is expected to level off, but the absolute number of individuals age 65+ will keep growing.
Nearly all older adults prefer to age in their homes and their communities, as opposed to an institutional facility.
In part as a function of major medical advances, more active life styles, and healthy eating behaviors, older Americans are living much longer today than in the past. Persons turning 65 today are expected to live on average another 18.7 years.
